First week of TAFE

This week I had started classes for the fabric design course. Despite all the expenses leaving me temporarily broke and the mayhem of organizing paper work, I'm really excited as already I can tell it'll be a great course. All our subjects fall more into the practical side directed to generate as much creativity out of us, with some classes solely aimed to develop drawing and painting skills. There's no essays, no extensive text book readings and as far as research goes (which we'll be expected to do a lot of), in this context it'll just consist of gathering visual images or items that inspire us.

So I thought I'd start the gathering process and share it here whenever possible. The first pic above is a satin stitching book (a gift from the wonderful lady who taught me how to cross stitch). The book is at a weary age with tape as its spine and, is in a language I can't understand. Thankfully, I'm more of a visual person.

I'm truly struck by the fact that these designs are firstly drawn then stitched over by hand. You can see in the cover page the threads in the leaves and because an overlapping stitching technique (not sure of its proper term) is used, the design has an embossed effect. It's really beautiful stitching work and quite a skill to have but as you can imagine, is very time consuming.

Anyway, I practiced some painting with reference to one of the designs from that book which is the 2nd pic. Painting fine, controlled strokes is what I'd like to be able to do and have recently taken up folk art classes to help. More about these folk art classes on the next post as I wanna get started on some homework hehe.

Exp1-001

Thought I'd share a few events that are happening in Sydney for free:

1. Tuesday 9 Feb. is a screening of the film The Age of Stupid at Starlight Cinema.

2. Sunday 21 Feb.  Tropfest (the world's largest short film festival) will be held at the Domain.

3. Saturday 17 April smARTarts youth arts and cultural festival as part of national youth week (10-18 Apr.). They're currently calling out for artists, performers and volunteers. Free stalls are available to young designers & artists, so if you're interested I reckon tis a good opportunity. I went to this fest. in 2008 and thought it was a tad bit low brow, but that's not such a bad thing. It just means there's potential for that event to grow as more interest is generated.

Over all, I admire the initiative of the people behind Pine Street creative arts centre and, what they try to promote through events like these so they have my support.

Happy new year everyone.

I'm excited for 2010, I got into that fabric design course. I'll try to be more productive than before and, have a few miscellaneous ideas for projects just waiting to be taken through to completion...

The powerhouse museum will be presenting the International Lace Award and entries are open for some lacy creations by March 2010. Their aim is to inspire designers, artists and architects to create a new generation of lace encompassing a diversity of materials, techniques/scale and featuring the artist's personal sense of 'place'.
Some big moolah is at hand to win with the overall winner receiving AU$20 000 and $4 000 ea. to 5 people who win under a specific category one being for example, Digital multi media (this category includes computer generated virtual lace design).

-sigh- if only I knew how to make lace :-( Oh well, I'm looking forward to seeing the exhibition. 

t shirts

So here's the t shirts I've printed from screen printing class, which by the way has finished. It was just a certificate II and I initially enrolled thinking that I may be able to screen print at home but after gaining insight from the course, it's just not feasible right now. Anyhow, it was good time filler, met some great people and happy with the my prints.
The image above are previews and below are the actual shirts, not all printed black on white . No. 1. and 2. were designed by my bf and I designed no. 3. I intend to stitch layers and layers over no. 3. using the image as a template.

venting . briefly .

oh man, I applied for a fabric design course that starts next year and I'm really hoping I get accepted. The portfolio I submitted I reckon was mediocre but I'm hoping they see some creative quality that could possibly flourish? Well, here's to hoping and here's a random drawing (above).
